The mountain was said to hold ritual ceremonies performed by kapuna(priests) and is considered sacred by people of Hawaii. Over 300 species of plants are endemic to Hawaii, found only in the islands, ethereal silverswords, bird-pollinated geraniums, Hawaiian mints are few of the amazing plants on Haleakalā. The Haleakalā silversword can be found around the summit of Haleakala is a low-growing plant with silver hairs on thick, stiff leaves, blooms only one time in its life then die soon after. Its flower can be pink, purple or white and be seen only from June to November. 

Home of the remaining endemic Hawaiian birds, Haleakala National park protect the best habitats for these birds. The Nene Goose – Hawaii’s state bird is the world’s rarest goose, found on the western slopes of Haleakalā between 5500-8000 feet. The ‘Ua’u – Hawaiian petrel is also found at the top of Haleakala, these seabirds have a three-foot wingspan, dark grey on top and white underneath. There are about 40 unique bird species here, make sure to check out and treat Haleakala’s residents with respect.
